Walmart Is Finally Adding Tap to Pay at U.S. Stores and Sam’s Club

Walmart is making one of its biggest checkout changes in years, finally bringing contactless Tap to Pay to Walmart and Sam’s Club locations across the United States.

The retailer announced on August 21 that it will begin rolling out Tap to Pay at select Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations starting August 24, 2026. Walmart plans to expand the technology to all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026, with fuel stations scheduled to receive support by mid-2027.

The change means shoppers will finally be able to use familiar contactless payment methods instead of relying only on a physical card or Walmart’s own payment system.

What Is Changing at Walmart?

Once Tap to Pay becomes available at a location, customers will be able to complete purchases by tapping an eligible:

  • Contactless credit or debit card
  • Smartphone
  • Smartwatch

Walmart says customers will also be able to add eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club and OnePay cards to supported digital wallets.

In practice, the upgrade opens the door to widely used mobile wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, something Walmart shoppers have requested for years.

Customers will simply hold their phone, watch or contactless card near the payment terminal instead of inserting a card or scanning a payment QR code.

Apple Pay Is Finally Coming to Walmart

The biggest story behind the announcement is Walmart’s changing position on mobile wallets.

Walmart has been a prominent holdout against Apple Pay and other standard NFC-based payment systems. Instead, the company promoted Walmart Pay, which allows customers to pay through the Walmart app using a QR code.

That strategy gave Walmart greater control over the checkout experience while encouraging shoppers to use its own app.

However, contactless payments have become increasingly common across supermarkets, restaurants, convenience stores and other major retailers.

With this rollout, Walmart is finally embracing the same tap-based payment experience that millions of consumers already use elsewhere.

TechCrunch notes that Walmart had resisted services including Apple Pay and Google Pay for years while focusing on its own payment solutions.

Walmart Pay Is Not Going Away

Tap to Pay will not replace Walmart Pay.

Instead, it becomes another payment option alongside existing methods including:

  • Cash
  • Credit and debit cards
  • Walmart Pay
  • Contactless cards and digital wallets

Walmart Pay will continue offering features tied directly to the Walmart app, including purchase history, digital receipts and access to Walmart+ fuel savings.

This gives customers more flexibility without forcing existing Walmart Pay users to change how they shop.

Sam’s Club Is Getting Tap to Pay Too

Sam’s Club locations are included in the rollout beginning August 24.

Members will be able to use Tap to Pay at supported checkout terminals while continuing to have access to Scan & Go.

Scan & Go allows members to scan products with the Sam’s Club app while shopping and pay directly from their phones, allowing them to bypass a traditional checkout line.

Tap to Pay therefore provides another option for customers who prefer using a normal checkout but still want to pay using their phone, smartwatch or contactless card.

When Will Tap to Pay Reach Your Walmart?

The rollout will happen in stages.

August 24, 2026: Tap to Pay begins appearing at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations.

By the end of 2026: Walmart plans to have Tap to Pay available across all of its U.S. Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations.

By mid-2027: The technology is expected to expand to fuel stations.

Walmart has not identified the complete list of stores receiving the feature during the first phase, so customers may not see Tap to Pay at their local store immediately.

Why This Matters

For shoppers, this might look like a relatively small checkout upgrade.

But for Walmart, it represents an important shift.

Consumers increasingly expect their phone or smartwatch to work as a replacement for their physical wallet. Supporting standard contactless payments reduces friction for customers who already store their cards inside digital wallets.

It could be particularly useful when someone forgets their wallet but still has an iPhone, Android phone, Apple Watch or another compatible device.

The move also means customers will no longer need to set up Walmart Pay simply because they want to make a mobile payment at Walmart.

At the same time, Walmart keeps its own ecosystem intact. Walmart Pay, Walmart+, OnePay and Sam’s Club Scan & Go remain available for customers who prefer them.

VerdictByte Take

Walmart adding Tap to Pay may feel overdue, but it is still a significant improvement for millions of shoppers.

Rather than requiring customers to adapt to Walmart’s preferred payment system, the company is giving them more freedom to use the payment method they already have.

The most important change will arrive gradually beginning August 24, so shoppers should not expect Apple Pay or Google Pay to immediately work at every Walmart.

But by the end of 2026, tapping a phone or smartwatch at Walmart should finally become a normal part of the checkout experience across the United States.
