Apple has finally entered the foldable smartphone market.
At its September 9 event, Apple officially unveiled the iPhone Duo, the company’s first foldable iPhone and one of the biggest changes to the iPhone design since the original model launched in 2007.
Instead of simply making another larger iPhone, Apple has created a device that works like a regular phone when closed and turns into a small tablet when opened.
iPhone Duo Comes With Two Displays
The iPhone Duo uses a book-style folding design.
When closed, users get a 5.4-inch outer display for everyday tasks such as calls, messages, navigation and social media. Open the device, and it reveals a much larger 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display.
The larger screen also brings new multitasking possibilities. Apple is supporting Split View, allowing users to run apps side by side or keep video content visible while working with another app.
iOS can also adjust depending on how the Duo is positioned, including when the phone is partially folded.
Touch ID Makes a Comeback
One surprising change is the return of Touch ID.
Instead of Face ID, the iPhone Duo uses a fingerprint sensor built directly into the side button. Apple says users can register multiple fingers, making the sensor easier to access whether the phone is folded or completely open.
The device can also be unlocked using an Apple Watch.
A20 Pro Powers Apple’s Foldable
Inside, the iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip.
The phone also uses Apple’s C2 modem for cellular connectivity, continuing the company’s move toward its own modem technology.
Apple has built the Duo using Grade 5 titanium, while the phone carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. It will initially be offered in two finishes: Star White and Night Sky.

Another interesting addition is Apple Pencil support, bringing the foldable iPhone even closer to the iPad experience.
iPhone Duo Price and Release Date
The biggest hurdle may be the price.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States for 256GB of storage, putting it firmly into premium-device territory.
Pre-orders are expected to begin on October 16, with general availability starting October 23, 2026.
That makes the Duo considerably more expensive than Apple’s regular Pro iPhones and positions it as a device for early adopters rather than the average iPhone buyer.
Why the iPhone Duo Matters
Apple is arriving late to foldable phones.
Samsung, Google, Huawei, Honor, Oppo and several other manufacturers have already been selling foldable devices for years. Foldables also remain a relatively small portion of the overall smartphone market.
But Apple’s entry could change that.
The iPhone Duo gives Apple users something they haven’t had before: an iPhone-sized device that can transform into a tablet-like screen without leaving the Apple ecosystem.
At nearly $2,000, it probably won’t replace the normal iPhone anytime soon. But the Duo may be the beginning of an entirely new category in Apple’s lineup.
VerdictByte Take
The iPhone Duo feels less like another yearly iPhone upgrade and more like Apple testing what the future of the iPhone could become.
The hardware looks ambitious, the larger display creates genuinely new possibilities, and Apple’s software integration could give it an advantage over existing foldables.
The real question isn’t whether Apple can make a good foldable.
It’s whether enough people are ready to spend $1,999 on one.
