ChatGPT Goes Unlimited for Free Users as OpenAI Removes Text Chat Limits

OpenAI is making one of its biggest changes yet to the free version of ChatGPT.

The company announced that ChatGPT Free users will soon get unlimited text conversations without hitting the usual message limits.

The change also applies to ChatGPT Go subscribers. OpenAI will use its new GPT-5.6 Luna model to power these conversations.

However, unlimited access does not apply to everything inside ChatGPT. Images, file uploads, voice features, image generation, and other tools will continue to have separate usage limits.

ChatGPT Free Users Are Getting Unlimited Text Chats

Until now, ChatGPT Free users could encounter rate limits after sending several messages within a certain period.

That could interrupt longer conversations and force users to wait before continuing. OpenAI is now removing that restriction for normal text conversations.

Starting next week, Free and Go users can continue text-based conversations without a standard message rate limit. The company says the feature will remain subject to abuse guardrails designed to prevent misuse. This could significantly change how people use the free version of ChatGPT.

Students could continue study sessions without suddenly losing access. Users could also work through longer research, writing, and planning conversations.

GPT-5.6 Luna Becomes the Default Free Model

Unlimited conversations are not the only major change.

OpenAI is also making GPT-5.6 Luna the default ChatGPT model for Free and Go users. The rollout begins this week, while unlimited text conversations will begin arriving next week.

GPT-5.6 Luna is designed as a faster and more efficient member of OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 model family. OpenAI says it has also improved factual reliability compared with its previous GPT-5.5 Instant model.

During internal evaluations, responses containing factual errors were about 62% less common with GPT-5.6 Luna than GPT-5.5 Instant. That improvement could matter because free users often depend on ChatGPT for everyday questions, research, and recommendations.

Free Users Are Also Getting a New Think Button

OpenAI is also bringing deeper reasoning capabilities to its free users.

A new Think button will allow users to give GPT-5.6 Luna more time to solve difficult questions. Instead of using deeper reasoning for every conversation, users can activate it when a problem requires additional analysis.

That could make the free tier more useful for mathematics, planning, research, coding questions, and other complex tasks. OpenAI says the Think button will roll out alongside unlimited text chats starting next week.

Unlimited ChatGPT Does Not Mean Unlimited Everything

There is an important catch. OpenAI is specifically removing limits from text-based conversations. Users should not expect unlimited image creation, uploads, voice conversations, or other resource-intensive ChatGPT features.

OpenAI confirmed that separate limits will continue for file uploads, images, and other tools. Therefore, someone repeatedly generating images could still reach a limit. The same applies to users relying heavily on file analysis or other advanced tools.

For basic questions and text conversations, however, the restriction is becoming much smaller.

What Happens to ChatGPT Plus and Pro?

The move naturally raises another question: why pay for ChatGPT if text conversations are unlimited for free? OpenAI is keeping several advantages for paying customers.

ChatGPT Plus and Pro users are getting an updated GPT-5.6 Sol model with stronger reasoning and improved factual accuracy. Paid users will also receive a new slider controlling how much reasoning ChatGPT applies to a response.

OpenAI says GPT-5.6 Sol produced factual errors about 68% less frequently than GPT-5.5 Instant during its internal evaluation. Paid plans also continue offering broader access to advanced models, tools, uploads, reasoning capabilities, and other premium features.

Why This Change Matters

Removing text limits could make ChatGPT considerably more useful to millions of people who do not pay for an AI subscription. OpenAI says around one billion people use ChatGPT every week for search, research, planning, advice, and other tasks.

Giving that audience unlimited basic conversations could also increase pressure on competing AI assistants. The competition between ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, and other AI platforms increasingly depends on what users receive without paying.

Making a newer model available with unlimited text conversations raises that bar considerably.

VerdictByte Take

OpenAI’s decision makes the ChatGPT Free plan much more capable than before.

For users who mainly ask questions, write content, brainstorm ideas, or research topics, hitting a text message limit should soon become less of a concern.

GPT-5.6 Luna and the new Think button also give free users access to more capable AI without requiring a subscription.

However, this is not completely unlimited ChatGPT. Advanced features such as images, uploads, and other tools will still have usage restrictions.

Still, removing the standard text-chat limit represents a significant upgrade for people who primarily use ChatGPT as a conversational AI assistant.
