The End of an Era: Rec Room Announces Permanent Shutdown

The virtual curtains are closing on a digital titan. Rec Room officially announced it will shut down on June 1, 2026. This news marks the end of a decade-long social VR experiment. The platform once boasted over 150 million players across various devices. However, popularity did not translate into a sustainable business model.

A Struggle for Profitability

The developers shared a surprisingly candid blog post regarding the closure. They admitted that operating costs consistently overwhelmed their total revenue. The team spent years trying to make the math work. Unfortunately, the shifting VR market created too many financial hurdles. Consequently, the studio chose to wind down while they still could. This decision follows a massive 50% layoff back in August 2025.

What Happens to Your Data?

Players cannot create new accounts or add friends starting immediately. If you have a Rec Room Plus subscription, it stays active until June. Furthermore, the developers are discounting all first-party items by 80%. Some premium features like avatar body paint are now completely free. Sadly, you cannot download a working offline copy of your custom rooms. The studio is providing data exports to help creators rebuild elsewhere. You must grab your photo archives before the servers go dark.

The Final Timeline

The countdown to the “Rec Room blackout” is officially ticking.

• May 1, 2026: Token purchases and gift card redemptions will end.
• May 18, 2026: Creators will stop earning tokens for their work.
• June 1, 2026: The servers and the rec.net website vanish forever.

Meanwhile, the community is reacting with a mix of shock and grief. Many players grew up within these low-poly virtual walls. It was a pioneer for cross-platform play between VR and mobile. Its departure leaves a massive void in the social gaming landscape.

Verdict Byte: Our Final Thoughts

This shutdown feels like a punch to the gut for the VR community. Rec Room was the “soul” of social VR for years. Seeing a $3.5 billion unicorn collapse proves how volatile the metaverse truly is.
