DoorDash Launches New App Called “Tasks” to Power the Future of AI

DoorDash just changed the gig economy game again. They officially launched a new app called Tasks this week. This platform lets Dashers earn money without delivering any food. Instead, workers perform small jobs to help train artificial intelligence. This pivot marks a massive shift for the delivery giant.

Beyond Delivery: What Exactly is DoorDash Tasks?

Specifically, Tasks are short activities Dashers complete between deliveries. They might take photos of restaurant menus to update listings. Some tasks involve recording unscripted conversations in various languages. Others require filming mundane chores like washing dishes. These actions provide real-world data for AI and robotics companies. Interestingly, Dashers can even earn money by helping self-driving cars.

The AI Data Goldmine in Your Pocket

Why is DoorDash doing this now? Every AI model needs high-quality data to learn. Standard lab data often fails in messy, real-life environments. Consequently, DoorDash is leveraging its eight million workers. They act as a massive “human sensing layer.” These Dashers are already on the ground in almost every neighborhood. They can capture the specific data that tech companies desperately need.

How It Works for Dashers

Dashers can access these opportunities through the new standalone app. Additionally, some tasks appear directly within the standard Dasher app. The company displays all pay rates upfront. Payouts depend on the complexity of the specific job. This provides a flexible way to earn when delivery demand is low. Furthermore, it allows Dashers to choose work that fits their current location.

Availability and Regional Restrictions

Currently, DoorDash Tasks is available in select U.S. markets. However, it is not yet live in California or New York. Seattle and Colorado are also excluded for now. These regions have complex labor and privacy laws. DoorDash plans to expand these offerings to more countries soon. They want to turn every street corner into a potential earning opportunity.

Verdict Byte: Our Feedback

At Verdict Byte, we find this move brilliant yet surreal. DoorDash is effectively turning its workforce into a massive research team. This provides Dashers with more ways to stay profitable. However, a clear irony exists here. Dashers are literally training the robots that might replace them. It is a clever business move with a double edge for workers.
